The Conference of Yacht Cruising Clubs (CYCC), which comprises 16 clubs* and associations representing some 24,300 members with 13,200 yachts, held its 31st annual conference on 10th January 2002 at the Royal Greenjackets mess in London under the chairmanship of Commander Colin Colby, Rear Commodore (Cruising) RNSA. The Army Sailing Association, whose members are serving or retired soldiers from all ranks, was admitted to membership, and provides valuable input from one of the larger yacht clubs.
The CYCC originally comprised clubs producing sailing directions, and this remains a central activity. A presentation was given by the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club on how they make best use of modern IT and publishing products to reduce the cost and work involved.
The conference also concerns itself with tackling problems facing those who
cruise yachts at sea and has representatives on RYA Cruising Committee, Hydrographic
Office Small Craft Group, and Trinity House User Consultative Committee. It
collects comments from members on proposals by Trinity House concerning buoyage
and lights.
The CYCC web site (www.cycc.org.uk) was
originally created to provide publicity for their sailing directions and to
provide web space for clubs without web sites. It posts and invites comment
on proposed changes to Aids to Navigation. It also collects information on harbour
changes. The CYCC makes much use of email to maintain communication between
clubs and authorities between meetings.
The CYCC sponsored members of the RYA Council are now invited to attend the conference, to feed back their experience and take the concerns of CYCC members back to the RYA.
Although unsuccessful in their lobbying to avoid closure of the Bracknell weatherfax broadcasts in 2001, this helped to achieve an enhancement of Northwood transmissions to meet the needs of yachtsmen. It is now seeking reassurance on the continuation of Northwood broadcasts.
The Conference was addressed by Kathryn Hossain of Trinity House, Kathryn Burnett from RYA and Bill Sandford from the Royal Institute if Navigation. Among the topics covered were:
