At the last meeting of the Conference, questions were asked about AIS (Automatic Identification of Ships) technology. There were reports that some Class A AIS receivers used by SOLAS vessels were capable of filtering out transmissions from Class B transmitters used by small ships. If so, it would reduce the effectiveness of the Class B transmitter.
In the September 2011 issue of RYA Cruising News, Stuart Carruthers, the RYA Crusing Manager, addresses this issue. His conclusions are that there are Class A sets which are capable of flitering Class B transmissions, and that such filters sre not inconsistent with IMO guidelines. His article can be read in full by RYA members on the RYA website.
