With effect from noon on Monday 4 February 2002 sea area Finisterre will become sea area FitzRoy, and the northern boundary of the sea area will also be re-aligned at at 48°27'.
The change follows an international agreement that Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and Morocco will use a co-ordinated set of sea areas in forecasts for shipping. In the discussions, Spain requested that a smaller area they call Finisterre be retained in the co-ordinated set of areas. To avoid confusion, a new name had to be found for the UK's sea area of the same name and the UK Met Office chose FitzRoy after its founder, Admiral Robert FitzRoy.
So if you sail to the end of the earth (finis terre) you come to FitzRoy instead.
