Those who rely on HF weatherfax broadcasts were disappointed by the closure of the Bracknell GFA transmissions on 3rd April 2001. That left Northwood B 14A as the only remaining UK source of weatherfax transmissions, although transmissions continue to be made from other countries.
Northwood exists for the Royal Navy and NATO Fleets. It is recognised the service is valuable to yachtsmen, but whether or not it continues, and in what form, depends solely on the needs of the Fleet.
Sources suggest there is no threat to Northwood broadcasts so long as minor war vessels remain dependent on HF fax transmissions. Five to eight years is a sensible estimate, although even within this period there might be adjustments to broadcast schedules, content and frequencies.
