Dear Colleague,
The Rye Fairway Buoy is sited in Rye Bay, some 1.85NM x 149º from the seaward end of the River Rother training wall at the entrance to Rye Harbour. The buoy was established in 1971 by the Kent River Authority,
predecessors in title of the Environment Agency, following their review in 1969/70 of aids to navigation provided at Rye. The buoy is currently
maintained by the Agency's Harbour Master, although it's position is outside the limits of jurisdiction of the Agency as harbour Authority for Rye. These limits extend to encompass the sea only within some 50 metres of the training wall. The Rye Fairway buoy is a Safe Water Mark with a L. Fl 10s white light.. Charted depths are 6 metres.
Consideration is currently being given to the continued requirement for this station locally, as well as its usefulness as an aid to general navigation. In this latter connection your observations on the current and future requirements for this station, particularly for vessels transiting the area and using the bay for shelter etc., would be welcome.
I would be grateful if you could let me have your comments by say, 30 April.*
Thank you for your assistance.
Yours sincerely
Kathryn Hossain
Navigation Manager
