On 22 September 2008 Marinecall announced the closure of its SMS (short message service) weather forecasts with effect from 30 November 2008. The reason given is a decline in the popularity of the service, and the explanation is thought to be the limited information that can be fitted into a 160 character message. SMS forecasts cost 25p each. The following is an example of Marinecall SMS message.
| BLYTH 10/01 9am: 4c, WD 142deg, WS 8kts, VIS 1km, RAIN 100% 3pm: 5c, WD 253deg, WS 20kts, VIS 15km, RAIN 12% |
